Case studies
Telecommunication site construction across the UK.
Ben Lee, Skye: multiuser telecoms site for Vodafone
Having constructed the remote multiuser telecoms site in the mountains of Skye, the route for the power supply couldn’t be resolved. With agreement from Crown Estates, DSC North developed a method to plough the seabed and winch a cable across the sea loch bed.
The site powered up, avoiding the need for several more sites and further environmental impact.

Isle of Tiree: new tower base for NATS
A large concrete base, in excess of 100m³ (some 250 tonnes), on poor ground next to a live tower. All aggregate and cement was delivered to the island by sea-going barge and transported to the hilltop site. Delivered on time and on budget for this critical service.
A57, Peak District: Emergency Services Network
The final site in the original network plan for the Emergency Services Network in the Peak District National Park: a fully underground “bunker” development in a protected wildlife reserve on sensitive peat, with traffic management on the busy A road alongside.
All DSC staff involved were trained for confined space working, combining technical concrete works, confined space working, traffic management and a sensitive approach to the land.

Ballachulish: Northern Constabulary comms tower
High above Ballachulish, serving the A82 from Glencoe to Onich, this site was accessible only by helicopter for much of the year and by specialist ATV in summer.
A 30m lattice tower on a 120m³ concrete base, a new power cable and telecoms accommodation units were all installed entirely by helicopter operations managed by DSC North.
